Dear Friends:
In these times when the percentage of the population who are crime victims (violent, financial, fraud, negligence, abuses of authority under color of law) is growing rapidly in step with the number of unpunished (or even rewarded) perpetrators, it seems that all of the media focus is on the perpetrators, their explanations and their actions. The victims are invariably a sideline story -- as if they were merely collateral damage, when in fact they were the targets and primary sufferers of abuse. Human beings are never collateral anything. Human beings are people. Real people.
If you are the victim of a crime, you have rights, too. We run the risk of forfeiting or losing our rights when we fail to exercise them. There are a number of government-sponsored resources to turn to for help. Contact them and make them work to defend your rights. Don't suffer in silence. Don't encourage the bullies and beasts among us to continue to prey on an increasing population of victims. Make some serious, loud noise.
A list of some of these hotlines and support services follows for your reference. They are your rights -- Use them or lose them.
Faithfully,
Douglas Castle
